Common Surrogacy Questions and Answers
What is Surrogacy and How Does Surrogacy Work?
Surrogacy, most often gestational surrogacy, is when a surrogate carries a pregnancy for the intended parents. An embryo is created through IVF using the intended parents' or donors' egg and sperm, then transferred to the surrogate. If the transfer is successful, the surrogate carries the baby to term and the intended parents step into parenthood at birth. The surrogate shares no genetic link with the baby in a gestational journey.
How Much Does Surrogacy Cost?
Cost of surrogacy varies widely depending on your path, your location, and your specific needs, so there is no single number that fits every family. In a complimentary consultation we can help you understand the pieces that typically make up a surrogacy budget so you can plan with clarity. For a question this personal, it helps to talk it through together.
Is the surrogate biologically related to the baby?
In a gestational surrogacy, no. The egg used to create the embryo is not the surrogate's own, so her DNA is never passed to the baby. She is the person who carries the pregnancy, and the genetic connection comes from the intended parents or their chosen donors. The surrogate being related to the baby is a common surrogacy myth.
What is Altruistic Surrogacy?
Altruistic surrogacy means the surrogate does not receive base compensation for carrying the pregnancy. She is still reimbursed for pregnancy-related expenses like medical appointments, travel, and lost wages. These journeys are often independent arrangements, and the surrogate is frequently a close friend or family member of the intended parents.
What is the difference between independent surrogacy and working with an agency?
An agency coordinates much of the journey for you, which can add structure but also significant cost. An independent journey gives you more control and often saves money, but it means more details land on your plate. Both paths can work beautifully. The right one depends on how much hands-on coordination you want and the kind of experience you are hoping to have. We support families on either path.
How Long Does the Surrogacy Process Take?
Every journey is different, but many take somewhere between 15 and 24 months from start to birth. Medical screening and the legal process add a few months once a surrogate is identified, and the pregnancy itself adds the final nine. Timing shifts with each family's situation, so think of this as a general range rather than a promise.
Do intended parents and surrogates each need their own attorney?
Yes. As a standard part of surrogacy, the intended parents and the surrogate are each represented by their own attorney so that everyone's rights are protected and the agreement is clear for all parties. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice, but we can help you understand where in the journey legal steps fit and prepare you for those conversations.
Does Surrogacy Reimagined match intended parents with surrogates?
We do not source, select, or match surrogates. That is intentional. Our role is to support your own search through your personal network and channels, and to advocate for you inside an agency relationship if you are working with one. Once you have identified someone on your own, we can help you screen that person for readiness and fit. We walk beside your search rather than running it for you.
What does working with Surrogacy Reimagined look like?
It starts with a complimentary consultation where we listen to your story and talk through where you are. From there we offer full Independent Journey Management, Concierge support alongside your agency, a self-guided course, and a free monthly support group. You choose the level of partnership that fits, and we meet you there.
How do I get started?
The first step is simple. Book your complimentary consultation and we will talk about your journey, answer your questions, and help you see the path ahead more clearly. You do not have to have it all figured out before you reach out. That is what we are here for.
